Current Initiatives

Annual High School Musical Project
A musical starring high school students will create a cluster of arts-related activity. The project will draw students from high schools with positions available in all aspects of performance and production, including stage management, technical, set construction, and wardrobe. The program will be offered free of charge, thereby removing financial barriers to participation.

Youth Musical Theatre Training Programs
The pillar of our youth engagement initiatives – the Youth Musical Theatre Program, which is based on Drayton Entertainment’s sterling reputation and expertise in producing musical theatre – will expand significantly to include classes and workshops throughout the year, and throughout the province. This will foster and develop skills useful not only for performers, but also well-rounded, socially engaged young community citizens.

Youth Education & Outreach Programs
Hands-on learning will complement the popular School Matinee Program, which provides subsidized access for close to 11,000 students a year, along with free study guides to help teachers link content to the provincial curriculum. Future program expansion will include in-school workshops, classes, and readings that provide grassroots access to the arts by taking live theatre directly into the classroom.

Technical Arts Learning Opportunities
New opportunities for children and youth to learn about the technical components of live theatre production (sets, lighting, sound, wardrobe, paint, and props) will serve as solid building blocks for exploring hands-on training through existing offerings of high school co-op placements and our Technical Arts training program for young adults.

Future Initiatives

Theatre for Young Audiences
A complement to Drayton Entertainment’s School Matinee Program, the Theatre for Young Audiences initiative will gear programming towards young people, their families, teachers, and peers in a space of joy, wonder, surprise and connection. With roots in education, it will encompass the presentation of musicals, plays, dance, music and puppetry attended by, and created for, younger audiences. Content will revolve around traditional child-friendly topics and bring topical story messages and arts workshops to under-serviced and under-represented individuals and communities throughout Ontario.

The Young Company
This year-long advanced training and mentorship program will be geared to aspiring artists who are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in the theatre. Youth will create and perform a vibrant topical production on our stage and at events across the province. Participants will receive acting, vocal, and dance training as well as professional development towards auditioning, industry best practices, workshopping new material, and much more.
