DRAYTON - Alex Mustakas, Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment, today announced a major celebrity casting coup for the 2009 Season. Canadian pop singer Melissa O'Neil, best known for reaching stardom as the third season winner of Canadian Idol (2005), will play the lead role of Gabriella in Drayton Entertainment's highly anticipated production of Disney's High School Musical.
Now 20, Melissa was the first female winner to take the Canadian Idol crown. She became a household name with her first single, "Alive", which debuted at number one on the Canadian singles chart, a position it held for four weeks. The single went on to be certified four-times platinum by the CRIA. Following the critical and commercial acclaim of her self-titled debut album, O'Neil was nominated for a Juno Award as Best New Artist.
"Melissa brings the stunning vocal prowess and youthful vitality required for an exuberant production like High School Musical," says Mustakas. "I am sure her many fans will enjoy seeing their Canadian Idol in a brand new light."
The production runs for three weeks at King's Wharf Theatre, Jue 3rd through June 20th, and is already over 60% sold out.
